Your Symptoms Are Important. But They Don't Tell the Whole Story.

After a car crash, it is natural to judge the injury by how much you hurt.

But pain is only part of the picture.

Some injuries hurt immediately. Others become more noticeable over the next several hours or days. You may develop neck stiffness, headaches, shoulder pain, back pain, weakness, numbness, tingling, difficulty concentrating—or simply notice that your body doesn’t move or feel the way it did before the collision.

Here is the important distinction: where you feel pain is not always where the injury occurred.

A headache may be associated with the neck. Arm symptoms may involve irritation of a nerve. Shoulder-blade pain may originate from structures in the cervical spine. And several injured tissues can produce remarkably similar symptoms.

That is why we don’t start by asking only:

“Where does it hurt?”

We also ask:

“What changed—and what was injured?”

Don't Wait for Pain to Explain the Injury.

One of the biggest misconceptions after a car crash is that the severity of the injury should be obvious from the severity of the pain.

It isn’t always.

Pain can fluctuate. Adrenaline and stress can affect how symptoms are perceived immediately after a collision. Inflammation and muscle guarding may develop over time. And some injuries affect movement, stability, discs, joints, ligaments or nerves in ways that cannot be determined simply by asking for a pain score. [3]

That doesn’t mean every ache after a collision represents a serious injury.

It means symptoms should be evaluated rather than assumed.

The goal of an examination isn’t to prove that you hurt. You already know that.

The goal is to determine why you hurt, identify objective findings when they are present, and use those findings to determine what care is appropriate.

You Don't Need to Know What's Wrong Before Asking for Help.

You don’t need to decide whether your symptoms are “bad enough.” You don’t need to know whether the problem is a muscle, joint, ligament, disc or nerve.

That’s what the evaluation is for.

If something changed after the crash—pain, movement, strength, sensation, headaches, concentration or your ability to do the things you normally do—it deserves to be understood.
